Drain cleaning that clears the clog and finds the cause

Slow sinks and backed-up tubs are symptoms. Clearing the line restores flow, and a camera shows why it clogged so it stays clear.

Why drains clog and how they get cleared

Every drain in a home eventually collects something. Kitchen lines gather grease, food scraps and coffee grounds. Bathroom drains accumulate hair and soap scum. Laundry lines catch lint. Main sewer lines can be invaded by tree roots, sag over time or collect everything the branch lines send their way. When enough builds up, water slows, backs up or starts gurgling.

The right cleaning method depends on the clog and the pipe. Hand augers and small cable machines handle fixture drains. Larger drum machines with cutting heads clear main lines and roots. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour grease and sludge from pipe walls, which is often more thorough than cabling for recurring grease problems.

When a drain clogs repeatedly or a main line backs up, a video camera inspection shows the pipe's condition and pinpoints the cause, whether it is a root intrusion, a belly in the line or a broken section.

Warning signs of a developing clog

Catching these early usually means a simpler, faster repair.

  • Slow draining in one fixtureA single slow sink or tub usually has a clog in that fixture's drain or trap, often from hair, soap or food.
  • Several fixtures slow at onceWhen multiple drains slow together, especially on the lowest floor, the problem is likely in a shared branch or the main line.
  • Gurgling soundsGurgling from drains or toilets as water drains elsewhere can indicate a partial blockage or a venting problem.
  • Water backing into the tub or floor drainWater appearing in a basement floor drain or tub when a toilet flushes or the washer drains points to a main line blockage.
  • Sewer odorsPersistent sewage smells can come from a dry trap, a damaged vent or a failing sewer line.
  • Clogs that keep coming backRecurring clogs in the same line usually mean something structural, like roots or a sag, that routine clearing does not fix.

How we handle a drain call

  1. Ask and assess

We ask which fixtures are affected and when the problem started to determine whether it is a branch line or the main line.

  2. Choose the right access point

Clearing through a cleanout or fixture drain, rather than forcing through a toilet, protects fixtures and reaches the clog directly.

  3. Clear the line

The appropriate cable machine or hydro jetter clears the blockage and restores full flow through the pipe.

  4. Inspect when warranted

For main lines and recurring clogs, a camera is run through the pipe to show the cause and the pipe's condition.

  5. Explain and advise

You see what was found, receive recommendations for prevention or repair and get flat prices for any additional work.

Cabling versus hydro jetting, and why cameras help

A drain cable, often called a snake, spins a steel cable with a cutting head through the pipe to break up or retrieve the blockage. It is effective for hair clogs, paper and roots, and it opens a path for water quickly. However, cabling often leaves a coating of grease or sludge on the pipe walls, and that residue can catch new debris. Hydro jetting sends water at high pressure through a specialized nozzle that scours the full diameter of the pipe, removing grease, scale and sludge. It is especially useful for kitchen lines and main lines with recurring buildup, provided the pipe is in sound condition.

A camera inspection makes the difference between guessing and knowing. A small waterproof camera on a flexible push rod travels through the line and shows roots entering at joints, low spots where waste settles, cracks, offsets and collapsed sections. A locator can mark the problem spot on the surface so any repair is targeted. For older homes, and before buying a home, a camera inspection of the main sewer line provides valuable information.

A word about chemical drain cleaners

Caustic and acidic drain chemicals can damage older pipes, harm skin and eyes, and make a technician's job hazardous if the clog does not clear. If you have used a chemical cleaner before calling, please tell the technician.

Choosing the right drain cleaning method

Different clogs call for different tools. Fixture drains, such as sinks and tubs, usually respond to small cable augers that break up hair and soap scum. Toilet clogs may require a closet auger designed to protect the porcelain. Main lines need larger machines with cutting heads to clear roots, grease and debris.

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of pipes. It is especially effective for grease buildup in kitchen lines and for flushing sludge from main sewer lines. Jetting is typically used after a camera inspection confirms the pipe is in suitable condition.

Camera inspection shows what is happening inside the drain. It can reveal roots entering joints, sags where waste collects, broken sections, offset joints or objects lodged in the pipe. The camera also helps locate problems so repairs can be targeted.

After clearing the drain, the right follow-up depends on what was found. Grease buildup may call for changes in kitchen habits or periodic jetting. Roots may require regular maintenance or repair of damaged joints. Structural problems may need repair or replacement to prevent recurring clogs.

Drain cleaning mistakes

These habits often make clogs worse or damage pipes.

Relying on chemical drain cleaners

Harsh chemicals can damage pipes and pose safety risks for anyone working on the drain later.

Pouring grease down the sink

Grease cools and hardens inside pipes, causing stubborn clogs.

Flushing wipes

Many wipes labeled as flushable do not break down like toilet paper and can clog drains and sewer lines.

Ignoring recurring clogs

Repeated clogs indicate an underlying problem that may require camera inspection.

Using the wrong tool

Improper augers or excessive force can damage fixtures and pipes.

What determines a drain cleaning price

Location of the clog
Fixture drains are usually simpler to clear than main sewer lines, which may require larger equipment.
Access
An accessible cleanout makes the job faster. Without one, access may be through a toilet flange or roof vent.
Method used
Hydro jetting and camera inspection add equipment and time but offer more thorough cleaning and diagnosis.
What caused the clog
Roots, broken pipes or structural sags may require repairs beyond cleaning, which are quoted separately.

Drain cleaning questions

Wipe grease into the trash instead of the sink, use a strainer, avoid putting fibrous foods and coffee grounds down the drain, and run plenty of water when using a garbage disposal.

Hydro jetting is safe for pipes in good condition. We may inspect with a camera first if the pipe is old or damaged, since jetting a weakened pipe could make a break worse.

Tree roots seek moisture and nutrients, and they can enter through small cracks or joints in older clay or cast iron pipes. Once inside, they grow and catch debris.

A camera inspection is worth considering if you have recurring backups, large trees near the sewer line or an older home, or if you are buying a property.

A plunger can clear simple clogs in toilets and sinks. If plunging does not work or the clog returns, professional cleaning is the next step.
